Be Teachable

Psalm 119:33-35

Teach me, O LORD, the way of Your statutes, and I shall observe it to the end. Give me understanding, that I may observe Your law and keep it with all my heart. Make me walk in the path of Your commandments, For I delight in it.

There was a time in my life when I studied for an entire summer to pass an important exam. I wrote detailed notes on index cards and I practiced them until I could successfully retain the information and recite it without looking. It was a very difficult exam, one that would determine the course of my professional career.

During that season of my life, I felt my Lord pressing upon me to study His Word with the same obedience and steadfastness, to obtain an even greater reward than any earthly prize. "The earth is full of Your lovingkindness, O Lord; Teach me Your statutes." Psalm 119:64

Although I consider all scripture to be inspiring, I have delighted in Psalm 119 particularly. According to my notes, Psalm 119 has 176 verses, making it the longest chapter in the entire Bible. It is an acrostic poem, which means that each set of eight verses begins with a letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The theme of each verse is a prayer of one who delights in and lives by the sacred law. "O how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day." Psalm 119:97

The words of Psalm 119 teaches me the stories and historical events of God's presence in people's lives. It is rich with wisdom, knowledge, mercy, and truth. It reminds me that, "Those who love Your law have great peace, and nothing causes them to stumble." Psalm 119:165

Over the years I have read every book and chapter of God's Word and some books many times over. God's Word teaches us and equips us to live on earth until His return, it is meant to comfort us and to be shared, His Word will not return void. It takes a lot of courage to speak of God to people who may not know of His loving kindness but it is our great commission "to go forth and share the Gospel with the whole world." Mark 16:15

Closing Thoughts

Spiritual leader, John Maxwell defines being teachable as "possessing the intentional attitude and behavior to keep learning and growing throughout life." Proverbs 4:13 encourages us to "Keep hold of instruction; do not let go; guard her, for she is your life." God is offering you the only educational experience you'll ever need; He calls on us to be teachable.

Psalm 119:105

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.

Psalm 119:57

The Lord is my portion; I have promised to keep Your Words.
