God In Our Own Image

Genesis 1:27 (NKJV)
27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

Oh, how can we get this wrong sometimes! God created man in His own image, not the opposite. Yet, how often do we try to fit God into the images we have created of Him? We try to bend His commandments, distort His will, and force Him into very small parts of our lives. We have created a buffet style view of God, taking the parts we like and disregarding the rest. What does a true relationship look like with God? Probably quite a bit different than we would like.
Step One: Accept Him… All Of Him
If we are going to have a true relationship with the Lord, it must be done with a complete commitment. We cannot choose what God is to us, after all, we are promised He never changes. Malachi 3:6 promises… (6) “For I am the LORD, I do not change; Therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob. If God promises not to change, He probably is not going to compromise that promise for you or me. We are very quick to accept His love, His grace, His mercy… are we that quick to accept His will, His direction, and His commandments?
Step Two: Commit… Every Day
How different would our life look if we truly commited each day to God’s will? Proverbs 16:3 urges us to… (3) Commit your works to the LORD, And your thoughts will be established… If we were to commit our works to the LORD, we would stumble less, and contribute more. His plans, after all, are far better than ours!
Step Three: Repeat
Each day we must be Christians that seek the will of God, doing so in a way that does not compromise who He is. John 3:16 tells us everything we need to commit ourselves to Him… (16) For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life… Whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life, what an amazing promise to people that do not deserve such a gift!
Closing Thoughts:
We try to fit God into this little box we make for Him. We like the love He provides, we cherish the promise of salvation, we appreciate the forgiveness He delivers, but we must love all of Him. Stop trying to make God in our own image, and understand that we should be striving to become a man or woman in His likeness!
Romans 8:28 (NKJV)
28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
