Guard What Was Committed To Your Trust

1 Timothy 6:20–21 (NKJV)

20 O Timothy! Guard what was committed to your trust, avoiding the profane and idle babblings and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge—21 by professing it some have strayed concerning the faith.

Grace be with you. Amen.

I have to admit that I take heart in verses like this, it means other more prominent men have to be warned against the same things we struggle with from day-to-day. Here Paul encourages Timothy to guard the godly while disregarding the worldly. How can we apply these warnings to our lives?

We Have Been Trusted

In Matthew 28:19 we are commanded… (19) Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit… God has trusted us with the most important gift that could ever be given, and the most important treasure that will ever be received, salvation. It is like God handed us the baton and has trusted us to get it to the next person we see, and the next person, and the next person. He has trusted that we continue the race, to see His plan through, to reach all nations. It really is an amazing thing. He could have reached the world in a number of ways, the fact that He allows us to be part of His plan is a true blessing and a great responsibility at the same time.

Avoid The Worldly

1 Peter 2:9–11 reminds us… (9) But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; (10) who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy. (11) Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul… I love how this scripture reminds us of who we are and why we must avoid the worldly junk that could ruin our witness. We have been called out of the darkness and into His marvelous light, the question is… how far have we distanced ourselves from that darkness?

Remain In The Truth

I assume that I am like many of you in that I cling to what John 14:6 says… (6) Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me… If He is the way, if He is the truth, if He is the life… why would we seek anything from the world? We have been entrusted with so much! How sad is it that we stray to profane and idle babblings?

Closing Thoughts:

Seek the way, seek the truth, seek the life, and avoid everything else!

Luke 16:10 (NKJV)

10 He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much.
